It's been awhile since I had a photo shoot outdoors that I forgot how fun it is. The great thing about it is that each photo will not be the same because the lighting will always be different and there are so many places you can go to.

This is my second time to take photo of Chris Anthony Wee. I did the styling and the make-up, we were styling and changing clothes in public which is one of the things I don't like doing outdoors. Good thing that Chris did not mind the attention. Chris is wearing a old navy white sweat jacket, blue stripe shirt and a navy blue pants with Ray ban glasses.

Things to think about when hiring a make-up artist

1. Your hiring a make-up artist to showcase your looks and not his make-up skills.

2. Look at their folio and see if they have a sample of looks that are clean and attractive and not just show cool and crazy make-up.

3. Ask if they can do hair if you are on a limited budget.

4. They must know how light affects the color of make-up and to adjust.

5. They must know how to make-up for black and white photography if you wish to have that in your folio.

6. Price. Expensive does not mean quality but save your money to hire only the best.

7. Do they stay during the shoot and do retouch and monitor your looks?

8. Are they on the set making sure that the looks remain intact and helping the photographer by giving them a second eye?

9. Are they willing to share some advice on make-up appropriate for you when you go to castings? It would be nice if you could find one who is generous in giving make-up tips also.

Guide to Retouching Headshots

Head shots are required in casting for actors and models. The image must be an accurate representation of who you are to help them remember.

It is not a glamour photo so you are not expected to look other than you really are. No heavy make-up is required. You may use a concealer to hide your minor imperfections.

Being called because of your "beautiful" heavily edited head shot but then got rejected because it does not look like you is just a waste of your time and money.

When editing, remove only the things that are temporary imperfections such as pimples or eye bags due to late sleep before the shoot.

If the condition is common and permanent such as age, wrinkles, moles, heavy scar, freckles, spots then they should stay. These signs shows character and how old you appear which are important in casting for roles.

Guide to Posing Styles

1) Classic Fashion - these are poses that were developed up to the 60s. These follow good compositional design and function to make one look attractive. These became so standardized they were thought of a mannequins. This is the style most used in catalog modeling.

2) Anti-Classic or High Fashion - A rebellion against the classic posing started with the 60s rebellion to look unique. This has intern become its own stylized look that is seen mostly in fashion editorial. This style breaks compositional lines and goes for distorted, awkward, deformed and yes ugliness.

3) Commercial print/Acting - Most often the pose is tied to direct non-verbal communication. An ad has an advertising message that need to be stated and how the model is positions carries the statement.

A Model's Guide to Picking Good Photographers

QUALITY
Simply take a look at the photographer's portfolio and ask yourself whether you can imagine the photographer's images in a magazine, gallery, or commercial product? If so, what kinds of magazines or products? Are these the types of places you would like your photos to be?

CONSISTENCY
This means you should look for several good shots done during a single shoot You should be confident that working with a particular photographer will yield work of a consistently high quality.

STYLE
Most good photographers develop their own distinct style. This doesn't mean one style is necessarily better than another in any absolute sense. You should pick a photographer who shows you examples of the kind of photography that you want in your portfolio.

FOCUS
Does the photographer have a particular style or a favorite kind of subject? If a photographer's portfolio consists of mostly nudes or boudoir photos and this is something that doesn't interest you, then be very clear about this during your correspondence with that photographer.

TALENT VS EXPERIENCE
As a general rule, judge a photographer by the work you see, not by any claims to years of experience.

REPUTATION &REFERENCES
Is the photographer reputable? Do they have references? Any professional photographer should easily have 3 or more references they can provide upon request.

COMMUNICATION
Finding a photographer with whom you can communicate openly and who can understand your style and personality is important.

LOCATION
Where does the photographer shoot? Do they shoot in a dedicated studio or a home studio? While it is true that many photographers work out of their own homes (to keep overhead low), it is good to discuss this before hand and get more information about exactly what type of environment you would be shooting in.

ON-LINE REPRESENTATION
A good photographer should care about the quality of their work beyond just their photographs. Even photographers who are unable to create their own web sites can easily use web based software to put information and photos online. Or they can simply hire a company to design and maintain a web site for them.

Does the photographer have a web site? Although you are working with a photographer and not necessarily a web page designer, something must be said about quality and attention to detail. Is the photographer's web site presented in a professional fashion or is it simply an afterthought

MODEL RELEASE
Any professional photographer should have a copy of their model release handy. It is good to review this release prior to your shoot date.

What does it take to be a Professional Model?

To be a professional model basically comes down to three things:

1) Having the look and talent that someone needs (generally the client) bad enough for the project they are working on at that time that they will pay you for your time.

2) Making life easier for the art director and the photographer so they will want to work with you, and not throw you out of their studio.

3) Making sure the client, photographer, and art director know you exist and want to work.

Professional modeling starts with the client's need and their willingness to pay. Modeling with out paying clients is just a hobby or someone trying to rip you off.

Having the right look and talent is what you inherited genetically and there is not much you can do to change that. The rest is where being a professional model comes in - knowing what to do and how to market yourself.

When a project calls for someone attractive to stand next to a new product, the person who can constantly look good in front of the camera, show the emotional expression that is needed on cue, show up on time and leave on time and in so many other ways make the shoot go quickly, efficiently, and successfully, is the person who will get the job.

That is also the person who gets asked back the next time. The part after the genetics is what makes a professional model and leads to a career in modeling. This is also the person who will deliver what the client needs and is why we use them and not just pull someone off the street.

Signs of a Scam Modeling Agency

1) Newspaper classified ads or display ads looking for any kind of model or talent. Reputable modeling agencies receive plenty of would-be model inquiries so they don't need to advertise for models. If they are short of talent they will send their scouts out to public places to look for potential talent.

2) Pictures of famous New York supermodels on the walls of their offices, or these models' comp cards on a wall rack.

3) Up-front fees. These could be signing fees, new account fees, evaluation fees, etc. If an agency has to charge money at the front end it means that there is not enough money at the back end. It also means that the agency probably does not have enough modeling work to be able to survive on commissions, and therefore, not enough work for a model to survive on either.

4) "We are interested in you but you need to test shoot with our photographer and it's going to cost you." Legitimate agencies will provide you with a list of photographers that you may go to on your own. Many will have a place by the front door for photographers' business cards that you can take on your way out. You should be free to go to any photographer you choose.

5) "We are interested in you but you need to go through our classes first and it is going to cost you." Again money at the front end means not enough modeling work at the back end. A combination school/modeling agency has a conflict of interest. For example, SAG (Screen Actors Guild) member agencies cannot offer both.

6) "We guarantee you work." Modeling agencies are not employers. They represent you and try to get work for you.

7) "As it says in our ad in the local newspaper we guarantee you work, just like the famous models on our walls, just as soon as you go through our modeling classes, shoot with our photographer, and pay our agency fees." RUN, do not walk, to the nearest exit.

In a models life, going to agents can seem daunting and you wonder if they will like you and want to represent you. You cannot model in any job without an agent, so this is vital for your career. Being prepared is always the ideal for any job interview and going to see a modeling agency is no exception.

Here are a few things that you can expect and that will be expected of you when you go to an agency:

"They will want to see you for who you are. Be cheerful and relaxed (or as relaxed as you can be), smile and show off yourself in the best light."

"Some agencies will expect you to have some knowledge of the modeling industry and where you see yourself in it. Have ideas about what type of model you would like to be and where you want to start as well as lead your career."

"Agents will expect you to be punctual. If you have an appointment, never ever be late. If you are late, they will see you as unprofessional and hesitant to accept you, because for the actual modeling jobs you cannot be late."

11 Acting and Modeling Audition Tips

1) Don't refer anyone as Uncle or Aunty

2) Make Good Eye Contact
Make good, strong eye contact. The director on audition may think that because you’re unable to do this, you either have something to hide or you may not have the conviction of your beliefs. If you’re struggling to concentrate when looking straight into someone’s eyes, then try looking in-between their eyes. They won’t be able to tell that you aren’t looking straight into their eyes, but you’ll find it easier to maintain focus. Try it with a friend first to see what I mean.

3) Keep Smiling
You need to practice a strong, sincere, smile. A good smile has the power to say, “I’m a happy, confident person and I’d love to work here”. Try practicing smiling in a mirror. Practice a smile that puts people at ease. It’s just as much your responsibility to ensure that there is a relaxed atmosphere during the interview.

4) Body Language
Again, try practicing this with a friend first. Make sure that your legs are slightly apart. Place your hands apart, on your thighs is good. Open body language is even more important during the audition. It demonstrates that you are receptive to the question and actively listening. Remember when you practice your body language with a friend to take a note of what to do with each part of your body. Unless you do that – and remember – you’re leaving it to chance that your body language come across well at your Acting and Modeling audition.

5) Don’t be too relaxed
It’s easy to appear as if you relax too much. This is especially prevalent if you’re asked to sit in a large sofa seat. Try not to appear too relaxed. Not sitting right back in the seat is a good idea. If you sit forward, it makes you look more attentive and more interested. Some people relax because they’re not very interested. Other people relax because they have bad body language.

6) Don’t be too Alert
If you’re too alert then you won’t appear too relaxed. If an experienced director is auditioning you then they might put this down to stage fright. They might just judge you on what you’re saying rather than how uptight you appear. However, They could leave the audition with a feeling that you weren’t as good as the other person simply because you were too erect. Try to relax… but not too much!

7) Sleep well before Acting and Modeling Audition
It’s all very well having fresh look at your acting audition, but if your eyes aren’t looking bright and interested then you’re making life difficult for yourself! Make sure that you have a good night’s sleep before your acting audition. Remember – this is a very important day – you need to look your best and have no bags under your eyes!

8) Pay attention
It’s important to be positive at your modeling audition. You need to demonstrate that you’re actively taking part in the audition. When your director is telling you about the role and script, make sure that you listen. This shows that you are listening and are interested in what they are saying. It shows that your are engaged in the discussion process and want to be part of the Production or movie.

9) Breathe deeply
One of the best ways to relax before an important audition is to breath deeply. If you breathe deeply, not only are you relaxing by slowing your rapid, nervous heartbeat, you’re also ensuring that your brain has as much oxygen as possible. This means that you’ll be able to think clearly at your audition and be able to respond to difficult questioning more rapidly. Breathing deeply before an audition will provide you with the effective combination of being relaxed and alert at the same time.

10) Accept an offer of a glass of water
You may not feel like a glass of water, but taking a sip from a glass of water can have a calming effect on your audition performance. It can give you an opportunity to collect your thoughts while refreshing you. It will also give you a chance to get used to the surroundings. This will also give you’re the opportunity to gather your thoughts and decide upon any amendments to your acting and modeling strategy as well as reviewing your prepared responses to questions.

11) Style your handshake
So many people haven’t got the right professional handshake. Remember that this is part of the first and last impression that you leave at the Audition. If you have a weak, limp handshake then this tells the director that you may not have the ability to deal with confrontation. On the other hand, if your handshake is too strong, then you may not be a good listener. You may be quite confident about controlling a situation, but you may be less likely to be democratic in approach.

Practice is the key. If you’re able to perform with good body language, you’ll find it much more easier to communicate because you’ll be speaking the same silent body language. This will put you streets ahead of the competition in the race for your dream role.

Advice to Aspiring Photographers

Here is an updated version of my advice to aspiring photographers.

For starters

• Take photos of your friends and family. This will help you learn to give direction to models. Help aspiring models since both of you are learning. It is ok if your models are amateurs. You need people who will be patient with you when you don’t know how to set your light.

• Do trade shoots with pro models when you have enough skills. You will learn a lot from them. They will help you in having an impressive portfolio too.

• Expose yourself with the works of masters in photography and other internationally known artist. Read books and magazines. Surf the net for images. This can develop your taste level.

• Find inspiration but do not imitate.

• Read books and attend seminars.

• You don’t need to pay a lot of money to learn. Use www.youtube.com, deviantart.com and other resources on the net. A lot of photographers are self-taught.

• Ask other photographers for tips. Don't get upset if they don't share since they all have trade secrets.

• Have an interest beyond photography for they will be the subjects of your works.

• Do not build your portfolio too much that you fail to move on.

• You need around 20 photos only to present to clients but they have to be excellent.

• Learn to edit your works. Select only the best

• Make your portfolio flexible.

• Select images that is appropriate to your clients needs.

• On apprenticeship. Do offer your time to pro photographers that has genuine concerns for your growth.

When already starting

• Do not give your services for free to clients who can afford to pay. Some business exploits photographers with the promise of publicity.

• What will give you work is your talent and PR.

• You don't need publicity if your work is lousy.

• Always put in writing your agreements before you start your work or at least make an agreement.

• Know how many image you will deliver, when you will deliver and how will the photos be used. If they need your RAW files. How complicated the PP would be and etc….

• Ask questions first before you make a quotation. Don’t offer fix rate. Every client has different demands from you and each has a different use for your images.

It was great working with designer Arnold Galang again after a couple of years since I started. I enjoy doing his shoots, he is very organized and well aware of how a phoot shoot should be done.

We are scheduled on March 2, 2012 at Art movement studio at 9am. It was a rush hour going to the studio. There was so many people inside the MRT that I got so squeezed on the pole. There was no trycle in Robinsons that goes straight there now, so I have to take another ride. I was 15 minute late and the rest of the team was there already except for the model Blenda who got lost.

The place was very organized when I came. Arnold hanged the pegs for the shoot on the wall. The make-up artist has pegs too printed and posted. Food was served at the start already. They always ask me if I need anything, food or drinks. The shoes and clothes are racked and all placed well.

I also love the service of Oliver Tam's Art movements studio thats why I always work there. They are very helpful and generous.

How to send your interest in working with a photographer?

You can’t be too aggressive when approaching a photographer that you put him in an uncomfortable position or too subtle that he is left confused with your intention. Here are some do’s and don’ts that might help you work with him.

Do’s

Send them a private message or e-mail. - So they can answer you at their own time.
Compliment their work – Get familiar with their photos and give sincere appreciation. This will show that you trust working with him.
State your intention – Tell him straight that you would like to collaborate.
Send a photo. - Head-shot and body-shot.
Be topless or in underwear if possible - To show your proportion, body type, confidence and preparedness to model.
Write your Statistics – Height, weight, waistline, chest etc.
Update them - Send them new photos if you have big changes in your looks. They might reconsider.

Don'ts

Don’t chat – It can be intrusive.
Don’t text – Same reason as above and they can’t answer unless they see a photo.
Don’t ask directly if you can model for him. - You are putting them in an uncomfortable position if the answer is no.
Don’t use “When is our shoot?” as your intro – That is so assuming.
Don’t send too much fashion photos - Send something clear and simple to be natural.
Don’t take it personally if you don’t get a reply– He might be busy or your looks don’t match his needs at that moment.
Don’t be too persistent – You will look desperate. Send another message for updates only.

Things You Should Never Do With a Photographer

This is for models who enter a trade shoot with a photographer. Having a good relationship with a photographer will ensure that you can have someone to help you update and give you good photos for your folio and perhaps refer you to clients and there are some things that you should not do if you want to work with that photographer again.

1. Never edit the photos that they gave you - It is a big insult to their art if you showed that you tampered with their work. If your not happy with the job then don't work with them again. It's like a painter giving you a painting then splashing paint all over it.

2. Refusing to sign a model release - A trade shoot is an exchange of services and you need to sign that to confirm your agreement to the deal. If you can't sign it then state your reasons to find an agreement.

3. Asking the photographers not to use your photo - Sometimes models asks the photographers not to use the photos especially if the material is sexy or nude after several months or days. Do not waste the photographers time if you think that a sexy or nude photo is dirty or something that will ruin your name. Sexy and nude photography is not for everyone and don't do anything that you think you will regret in the future.

ENIGMA by CHRIS DELA CRUZ my first book is now available.

I was just done updating my website and my book is already published. I'm very happy with how the book looked. What is so funny about it is that even though I don't do much planning with most of the shoots here. They turn out so well. When I plan they don't turn out the way I want it to be. So I have learned to let go of control and just trust that what needs to happen should happen. Most of the decisions that I made are intuitive.

Just some facts about the shoots that i did that are very amusing. The shoot for the cover page (The queen is dead) was not supposed to be shot in the fire staircase. We were supposed to shoot that on the rooftop but the security did not allowed us cause we did not have a permit. I just remembered that the lighting in the fire staircase was very dramatic with the small window giving strong lights, so I just went there with my beautiful model so embarrassed that I was not prepared.

The shoot in UST was done very fast. I think we started pass 4pm because the models were late and we still need to do make-up and wardrobe. So I just looked around the place and find the best locations and finished the job in an hour because the sun is already setting.

I use a lot of intuition in what I do. The way I frame the photos. In finding the right angle and how I should process the photos are very intuitive. I don't make advance planning because sometimes the people, clothes and other resources are not there. I just trust that there is something that is guiding me that comes as an inspiration. Events that must happen that you just have to allow. People that will come to you for a reason and you just know that they are the one.
